The Comparing Perception of Advance Directives in One General Hospital Doctors and Nurses

Abstract
|
|
|
Purpose: This study applied the baseline data in order to develop an ethical education program that can help the establishment of accurate perception and values for health care provider by comparing perceptions about advance directives of intent of doctors and nurses in one general hospital.
Method: Data collection period of the study was from April 30, 2012 to May 25, 2012 and it targeted 94 doctors and 154 nurses who work in a general hospital located in Incheon, were asked about ADs, including Do-Not-Resuscitate (DNR), medical power of attorney, living will and medical options.
Result: 77 nurses(53.1%) and 61 doctors(64.9%) were unfamiliar with the perception of the advance directeves, after explaining it, 141 nurses(97.9%) and 86 doctors(91.5%) agreed with advance directeves. The majority of the nurses and doctors were not clearly perception about the advanced directives. But nurses and doctors wish to receive comfortable and painless care.
Conclusion: There is a need for the development of an ethical education program for health care provider in order to establish an accurate recognition about the changing medical treatment ethics and legalization content.
